As a member of Dr. Patrycja Dubielecka-Szczerba’s laboratory at Brown, Alissa Oakes focused her research on the biology of blood cancer-initiating stem cells. The lab studies the role of these cells in the development, progression and relapse of myeloproliferative neoplasms with the translational goal of therapeutically targeting neoplasm-initiating stem cells. On June 6th, 2024, Alissa successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled “The Complement Cascade in Myeloproliferative Neoplasms.” Afterward, Alissa enjoyed a lively celebration on campus in Sidney Frank Hall with her Advisor, Dr. Dubielecka-Szczerba, and Brown students, faculty and staff. Alissa's lab mates surprised her by filling empty blood donor bags with a delicious mix of cranberry juice and pineapple juice. They offered the unique beverage choice to attendees at the celebration. The creative bags were a true delight and the refreshing juice was enjoyed by all. Alissa's daughter "Ava" proudly attended both the PhD defense and the celebration afterward. Alissa's other family members traveled from around the US so they could proudly celebrate this tremendous milestone in Alissa's life. Congratulations, Dr. Oakes!
